WHEN IS YOUR SNACK DAY?
Your child will be assigned 1 or 2 days per month to provide snacks and drinks for the whole class. You will receive a monthly calendar that will indicate your assigned day.

HOW MUCH SNACK DO I BRING?
HALF-DAY students will need to send in only ONE SNACK TRIO.
FULL-DAY students will need to send in TWO SNACK TRIOS (1trio for a snack and 1 trio for pm snack)

WHAT IS A SNACK TRIO?
A SNACK TRIO is two different food items from two different food groups and a drink to complement the food items (3 items). When shopping for your snack, please choose a whole (or store-prepared) fruit or veggie and another item that is low in sugar and fat and contributes to your child’s daily nutrition.

All snack items MUST be store purchased, packaged or prepared and arrive sealed in it’s original packaging with nutrition and allergen information. NO HOME-MADE snack items are permitted. You DO NOT need to purchase individual servings.

Below you will find examples of typically enjoyed snacks from each of the food groups.

FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

  • whole apples, tangerines, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, grapes, etc. If you would like to send in watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple or other large fruits, you will need to buy the store-prepared and packaged fruit.
  • apple sauce, mandarins, mixed fruit cups, squeezy fruit pouches – also a great alternative. However, please choose the NO SUGAR added or packed in water choices. NO HEAVY SYRUP or high fructose
  • dried fruits like raisins and craisins are a fun alternative but again choose the NO SUGAR ADDED.
  • mini carrots, carrot chips, broccoli, celery, snap peas etc. are a yummy choice – feel free to send in fat free veggie dip or dressing to go with. Keep in mind that you would need to buy veggies already prepared and packaged by a store.
  • salsa! Send in some whole grain corn chips to go with!

DAIRY GROUP

  • yogurts and the tube on the yogurts – choose the low fat, low sugar naturally flavored and colored brands.
  • cheese sticks, prepared cheese slices, baby bell or the like
  • milk – low fat only. NO WHOLE milk
  • yogurt drinks – choose drinks with no added sugar and color
  • cream cheese

GRAINS GROUP

  • whole grain crackers, Wheat thins, Triscuit
  • Graham crackers, pretzels, baked snack crackers, pita chips – choose low fat baked snacks.
  • pop-corn, no added colors, sugar or butter
  • granola bars and other bar type items – avoid candy flavored/enhanced choices

PROTEIN GROUP  (NUTS, LEGUMES, MEATS)

  • whole grain crackers, Wheat thins, Triscuit
  • Graham crackers, pretzels, baked snack crackers, pita chips – choose low fat baked snacks.
  • pop-corn, no added colors, sugar or butter
  • granola bars and other bar-type items – avoid candy flavored/enhanced choices

WHAT IS NOT PERMITTED TO SEND FOR SNACK?

  • No Chips, Doritos, cheese puffs (baked corn tortilla chips are ok for 4 and 5 yr. olds)
  • No cookies, cakes or muffins (unless it is a birthday treat)
  • No dried Fruit snacks, fruit roll ups or the like
  • Juice that is NOT whole fruit juice. No added sugar or heavily colored drinks like Hawaiian Punch, Sunny D, Hi-C etc.

IMPORTANT!!!!!

DCF RULES PROHIBIT “chokeable foods” for all children under 4 years old.
This would include foods like: whole grapes, any type of chip, popcorn, cheese cubes or like-sized foods. DO NOT SEND THESE ITEM IN if your child is in the Twos Turning Three OR Threes turning Four Classes.

BIRTHDAY SNACK celebrations are the one exception to our “healthy snack” rule. If you would like to send in cupcakes, cake, cookies etc. to celebrate your child’s birthday please also send in a whole fruit and low-fat milk or yogurt drink to round out the trio. If serving cupcakes/cake please to choose white icing on the treats instead of the heavily colored icing. The mini cupcakes are the PERFECT size for a birthday snack. Special orders MUST have a nutrition label and be prepared by a food store.

SPECIAL OCCASION PARTIES are also an exception to our “healthy snack” rule. However, staff will do their very best to make sure your child’s snack/meal time is balanced and healthy foods are consumed before any treats/snacks are eaten.

SEND ALONG ALL ITEMS NEEDED TO SERVE and EAT YOUR SNACK – We always have 5oz cups and napkins. If you’re sending in cut fruit or peanut butter, humus or dip, please send in small paper plates. Please send in any utensils needed to eat your snack (spoons, forks, bowls, plates).
